Coast Highway 1 along the scenic Sonoma coastline presents spectacular views. State beaches offer numerous opportunities to take a walk on a stretch of sandy beach or to clamber over rocks looking for sea life in the tide pools. Late in the day, watch the sunset splash color across the sky and reflect off the waves. Enjoy the Sonoma Coast any time of year.

Petaluma is the southwest gateway to Sonoma’s wine country. Established along the Petaluma River in 1858, Victorian homes and cast-iron fronted buildings surround this charming town filled with great shopping, restaurants and entertainment in a walkable downtown district.

Occidental is set deep among the towering coast redwoods that gave rise to a booming lumber industry in the late 1800s. The old-time flavor is still here, along with updated shops, art galleries, events, hospitality and dining.

Freestone has antiques to peruse, a general store, and an organic bakery with sweet and savory items baked daily. Rejuvenate at the Japanese-styled spa and stay at the tiny hamlet’s historic inn.

Valley Ford was once a major cattle ranching center, but now there are galleries and shops, and delicious cuisine in a bucolic western setting. Recreational opportunities include kayaking on the Estero Americano, hiking trails and miles of scenic bicycling.

Bodega is the historic hamlet where Hitchcock set his film, The Birds. Get up close to the late-19th century school house and St. Teresa of Avila chapel that had cameo roles in the movie. Stop into the local saloon for more local lore or shop for arts and crafts.

Bodega Bay visitors can take fishing expeditions or horseback rides along the beach. The dramatic headlands offer the thrill of spotting migrating whales from January through March. There are also fine art galleries, fun shops, and lots of fresh seafood to enjoy.

Jenner is where the mouth of the Russian River meets the sea. A wide variety of birds take advantage of the rich the lagoon and wetlands nearby. Sea lions and otters also populate this dramatic environment. See it all from a picture window while dining at the river’s end.

Duncans Mills is just inland from Jenner, a quaint village with unique shops, galleries, wine tasting, restaurants and cafes, nestled between forested ridges and beautiful meadows along the lower Russian River.

Fort Ross was the early settlement where the Russians based their otter-hunting operations and attempted to secure a foothold in North America. Travel back in time while touring the fortress, barracks and interpretive center at this state park.

Timber Cove is a popular fishing destination for abalone divers and coastal fishermen seeking a wild and spectacular setting. The recently updated inn provides sumptuous resort-style accommodations and dining.

Sea Ranch is the internationally famous vacation spot known for blending architecture with nature in a simple but stunning environment. Enjoy golf on a Scottish-style course, hiking, fishing or clamming, relaxation and fine dining. Take Annapolis Road off Highway 1 for a meandering 14-mile drive that winds along the ridgelines, dropping in and out of remote and beautiful coastal valleys.

 

Gualala lies just over the Mendocino-Sonoma County line (and the scenic Gualala River). Home of galleries and a major art and cultural center, Gualala is a delightful coastal community with much to see and do.
